Thesis Statement
Upon Britain's decision to withdraw from India after WWII, India's political leaders were split over how an independent India should be governed. The idea of a united India was countered by the Muslim minority's demand for a separate homeland. After countless failed compromises, the Muslims called for direct action, resulting in the Great Calcutta Killings. This event was a critical turning point in India's history, as it led to India's partition, causing the largest human migration in history and creating two rival nations. Tensions between these nations continue today.
